Danish Champion Sports Car Driver Christina Nielsen: Being Female in a Male-Dominated Sport

Twenty-five-year old Danish champion sports car driver Christina Nielsen came to Cross Campus Santa Monica in Feb, 2017 to give a talk on the business of sports car driving.

Christina, the daughter of legendary Danish race car driver Erik Nielsen, made quite an impression on the event’s attendees by arriving with a suped-up version of a Ferrari 488 GTB — and proceeding to park it in the middle of our event space.

Turns out a sports car version looks almost identical to the road-legal version on the outside, but almost completely different on the inside. Which attendees could attest to personally, as they clamored to be able to sit in the speed rocket during cocktail hour.

Christina came to Cross Campus by way of the Danish-American Chamber of Commerce of Southern California, which produced the event she headlined.

After the event, we caught up with Christina and asked her about the realities of competing as a woman in such a male-dominated sport.

As she put it:

“When a new guy comes into the team, he starts at level zero. But sometimes a woman starts a level ‘minus-one.’” – Champion sports car driver Christina Nielsen
